Dwarf Fortress: Regas Glovecave

So My pal and I decided to do a combined effort on one Fortress in Dwarf Fortress. I believe the plan is that we play for one year of game time, then pass then fortress to the other player. This is the beginning of the world and the first season.

Let me start by saying that I have never played Dwarf Fortress before this game. I have read the epic tale of Boatmurdered and watch a few videos on YouTube, and that is the extent of my knowledge.

I have set up out guys in a nice mountainous area. There doesn’t seem to be a river around, which may prove to be a problem…

Starting Area Image

In oversight, I forgot to take an image of the whole area… next time.

I didn’t have too bad of a start with the way i set it up so far, but we will see how it turns out later on.

The first thing i did was start to carve out a cave for the poor saps to live in. I made a nice wide entrance (for caravans later) and an area for them to stop to trade at. I made a few side rooms farther in and designated one for food storage and one for use later. Digging even farther in, i made some small branches in the cave so i could have bedrooms for the men to sleep in. This reminded me that i needed wood, so i got some cut and placed in a stockpile outside while there was a carpentry workshop being made in the previously empty room. (I also ended up with a mason workshop there and a furniture stockpile.)

The cave was in rock, so i had stone lying EVERYWHERE. Damn miners make such a mess. I designated a quite huge stockpile outside for the stone so it would stop blocking everything i wanted to do, such has have the full real estate for my food stockpile… which reminded me that i needed to get some food production done.
I dug down a level so i could get to some water and have an underground farm.
Calculations were a bit off, but the farm still turned out nicely.
Farm
My farmer was hard at work planting some shrooms for later. :)

Other than that, i have a mechanic workshop going up. Not much happened the first spring here at the Regas  “Glovecaves”, as they are called.
Here is what i ended with when summer started:

We’ll see how it goes tomorrow, and if i mess everything up…
Hm.
